I’ve never been athletically inclined, nor even had a good sense of coordination and therefore always dreaded the new school year, knowing that I would have to play team sports in PE. The pressure to perform on a team runs deeper than just the mere mark given for the course. I was playing with my fellow classmates, the same ones I saw day in, day out, in the halls, in the cafeteria, and after school. If I make a fool of myself on the field or if I let down my team, it could haunt me in all the aforementioned places. So you see, the pressure is very real. One of my biggest challenges to NOT looking like a complete imbecile on the field, was figuring out what the heck I was supposed to be doing. “Mike, you’re playing mid-fielder” the teacher would yell, “OK” I would respond, and head out onto the field, not knowing where to stand nor even what I was supposed to do.
